PCMag's Guide to Security Software

These days a Web-connected computer simply can't be without
security software. Many different types of security
protection are available. From Norton to Kaspersky, here
are the best of each.

Using Protection on Facebook

This free browser add-on disables scam and virus links on
any Facebook page you view. Other than the warnings it
inserts when a threat is found, it's almost totally
invisible. It doesn't seem to catch the newest threats,
but as more users install this free product it should
become more effective.

Sprechen Sie Mango?

The Mango Passport language-learning program teaches solid
content for travelers. The software is mature, with a
polished interface and clear audio recordings, but because
it lacks most of the interactive goodies found in other
language programs, Mango measures as a modest product for
its $150 price.

Acer Iconia Tab A500

Acer's Honeycomb tablet, the Iconia Tab A500, has similar
strengths and weaknesses to its direct competitors, but its
$450 price is easier to swallow than some others. The Iconia
is a bit bulkier than the Xoom and G-Slate, and it's Wi-Fi
only, but if that works for you, it's a great slate.

CloudTalk Makes Voicemail More Like Texting

CloudTalk offers mobile users a new way to communicate: with
asynchronous group voice messages, along with text, photo,
and video. It's great for collaboration, when you need to
convey emotion or give more detailed explanation than text
allows. The service also lets you create public groups. And,
surprise surprise, the experience is better on iPhone iOS
than Android.

Four Stars for Ubuntu 11.04, aka, Natty Narwhal

With its astounding array of distributions, considerable
complexity, and traditional user-unfriendliness compared to
what you often see with Mac- or PC-based operating systems,
Linux has always been controversial. But Ubuntu 11.04
("Natty Narwhal"), the latest version of one of the most
popular free mainstream distros (available through a 700MB
download at Ubuntu.com), is likely to be one of the most
polarizing releases yet.

Bonitor MP302 Pico Projector

Beware of this cute little projector! The $289 Bonitor MP302
Pico is tiny, portable, and compatible with both PCs and
Macs, but a host of problems makes it a less than ideal
choice. For a little extra money, you can definitely do
better.
