Hello Fooboozers!
Think working for tips is tough? You don't know the half of it. In addition to your paycheck being directly affected by how well you pretend to be nice to strangers, there are also some restaurants out there (okay, a lot of restaurants) that skim a percentage of their employees' tips to cover the processing fees charged by credit card companies every time you slap down the plastic to pay for dinner. Councilman Jim Kenney doesn't think that's fair (and is even more upset about restaurants that take the full amount of the processing fee out of servers' tips, rather than just a portion), so he's looking at introducing a bill to make tips untouchable—and himself the hero of waitresses and bartenders everywhere. In other news, Spread Bagelry opened on May 2nd. Then it caught fire on May 5th. Michael Solomonov of Zahav, Xochitl and Percy Street Barbecue brought home the James Beard Award for Best Chef Mid-Atlantic, joining the ranks of such past winners as Jeff Michaud, Jose Garces and Marc Vetri. There's a bar in Brooklyn that now has its own cocktail-dispensing slot machine robot—and in the meantime, all we have are those lame wine kiosks at the grocery store. We lost Harry Ochs at Reading Terminal Market and a bunch of other beloved local restaurants, but gained a couple in the balance. And finally, we've reached the finals in our Best New Restaurant bracket. The battle is now down to Barbuzzo vs. Adsum, so get in there now and make your final vote count. — Jason Sheehan, Food Editor

“Super cold, super small restaurant with lotsa tables crammed in it. Food was ok. No Mediterranean feel here. Noisy, high energy, uncomfortable; Nothing like what you'd find in the Mediterranean. Desert was good though.” READ MORE
