Until last year, the studios on Carnegie Hall's upper floors were the premiere semi-secret place to live in New York. Dozens of airy apartments housed msuicians, dancers, photographers, and other artists, most of whom had been there for ages. It was a time capsule of mid-century arty Manhattan, and just before it all came to an end—when the Carnegie Hall Corporation decided that it needed the space—Josef Birdman Astor took his documentary camera into this tight little world. Lost Bohemia is the fine result, anchored by its great scene-stealer: Editta Sherman, a 98-year-old portraitist and 60-year resident who fought the eviction to the very end.
