Hello Fooboozers!
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past week, you probably heard that Philly’s Michael Solomonov brought home the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Mid Atlantic, bestowed upon him for his grilled duck hearts, lamb’s tongue and oxtail soup at Zahav. It would’ve been hard not to know this, considering the amount of tweeting, Facebooking, blogging and press releasing that went on before, during and immediately after the event. But hey, maybe your rock doesn’t have Wi-Fi. Later in the week, our fair city picked up another honor, with Barbuzzo getting tagged as one of the 10 Best New Urban Restaurants in North America by Frommer’s. In other news, a replacement for the almost-but-never-quite-opened Speck at the Piazza has been chosen: it’s Raw Sushi and Sake Lounge—a second location following in the footsteps of the Sansom Street original. We also had a Tale of the Tape on Stephen Starr's newest, Frankford Hall, some pictures of ugly lunchmeat, a roundup of all the tweeting food trucks in Philly, a Beer Week primer for the uninitiated, news on the closure of Hoof + Fin, some burger backlash over the announced openings of 4 new locations for Jake’s Wayback Burgers and a list of the 11 best uses for foldable gin. Yeah, you read that right: foldable gin. — Jason Sheehan, Food Editor
